Buffy the Vampire Slayer

October 8, 2009

After intense epic posts on MLP where I make you really carve time out of your life, I like to then follow up with something lighter…more like bubble gum. :) So this post is to just bask for a few minutes in the beauty of a little TV show called Buffy-The Vampire Slayer.

I made fun of Buffy before I ever saw the show. Pshya! I had total disdain for the fantatics that parked themselves in front of the TV every week, blocking out the world and its’ unpredictable juicy-ness to walk through a fictional, mystical account of the life of one BLONDE. I mean, please. it’s all about the redhead, people.

But I caved at some point, and found the writing refreshing, the story line compelling, and the other character development as integral and important as the Lady Herself. I was sucked in, and yes, I hated myself for it. It’s just so corny and heart breaking.

There are 7 seasons, and it really doesn’t pick up steam until Season 2. It peters out, for me, around Season 5. But I’ve found a remarkable thing happens, when I watch them now. (I’ve seen the whole series of course). I start working through the tough questions in my brain. Start sorting through unresolved issues in my life. Release tension.A little mini mental oasis. Relax, and allow my mind to drift off on a background wave of love, friendship, adventure and unexpected romance. Pretty much like my own life.

I have been able to get to the heart of so many matters in my life because of the downtime that watching Buffy allows me. Some people drink, or work out. Some people take a toke on the pipe, or do yoga. There are a hundred ways we humans utilize recreational activities to work through what’s going on internally, Buffy just happens to be one of my ways. Of course, I have others. But when its Bad? It’s Buffy, all the way.

Since the series is now over, several writers and artists have been working on the comic book series. It picks up where the show stopped, so it’s a kind of Season 8. I’ve been enjoying them quite a bit, though the fever is definitely more of a low burning flame in my affection. But if you start Buffy-bashing, I will have to rear my head and go all Medusa-like on you.

So if you haven’t had a chance to take a gander, I suggest it. I’m not saying its for everyone, but it may give you something.Since it’s been 10 years,it can feel dated. But in a nice way. :) Ahhh, the 90’s !!
