My favorite restaurant, Cafe De La Paz, in Berkeley, CA, has shut down after 15 years of thriving business.The f.uc.k.ing.e.con.om.y.
When I first encountered this place, I was baffled as to how/why it was oriented the way it was. It looked exactly like someone had cobbled together three different restaurants. The dining area, or most of it, was upstairs, with a window to the cooking station.The back wall was made of stone, with a fountain coming from the wall, and small ceramic vases held single Gerbera Daisies. Yarn paintings, which I’d never seen before, were all over the bright colored walls. The yarn was so luscious and bright, it looked like rainbow blood. If you wanted the restroom, the bar, or a small sitting area near the bar, or the conference area, you went down a rickety set of linoleum stairs. They creaked.
Around the corner, through the double doors, into a gloomy half-lit large space with lonely 6′ round tables for groups.I was only in this room once, for a sustainable business networking event, and it was sort of boring. Its my understanding that dance performances went on in here, and I’m extremely agitated that I never set aside the money to go in the past.
Across the room, into a neglected feeling hallway to two restrooms, which are of course, cheery and bright, even though you just went through the creep factor to get to them. Back at your table, which has the rare magic of no matter where you sit, its a ‘good’ table in the place, you order the following:
The homemade guacamole and chips as an appetizer
Pescado del Dia (Fish of the Day, with pumpkin, sunflower, and various seeds encrusted on top)
on a bed of mashed potatoes, with a hint of chives
next to,
fried plantains, drizzled with their signature mango salsa.
Top all this off with a carafe of Sangria, and you have nearly every important first date I’ve been on in the past 10 years. I had my 30th birthday here. I’ve had significant, and insignificant conversations, all of which contain the glue of my existence. To think I’m never going to have this experience again boggles my mind. And I found out by trying to go there with a friend to celebrate my birthday in 2007, and standing on the cold street, looking at the darkened doors, and I felt my heart break.
I am not a foodie. I do enjoy eating, but don’t have the genetic disposition to know which seasonings go with which foods, or in what order you are even supposed to begin cooking. I do okay with breakfast. I can make you food when you are sick (hello, soup!) I can even bake one of the most renowned pumpkin pies in a 50 mile radius (exaggeration). But cooking? No. Not this girl.
So please believe me when I say, I do not want to talk about the Pescado Del Dia. But I certainly have been thinking about it pretty regularly for 3 weeks.
The other thing I don’t want to talk about is cervices.(Thank you, Ernie, for the corrent spelling of the plural of cervix).

I know this may seem incredibly archaic, but I think of yoni’s and the various process’ that go on in them, to be of the stuff of magic and alchemy, not science. I am very squeamish to see the insides of a person up close, especially a woman’s parts.

You see, contrary to all my bluster, bravado and courage about things emotional, I really am a bit of a physical gore pansy. Can’t handle horror, am a vehement pacifist, and don’t like blood and guts. I had a hard time at the BodyWorks Exhibit that’s been touring around the country. But I braved it anyway.
So when my webmaster sent me this link, I said “No, I’m not going to write about this”. Then I paused. For several hours. And realized, wow, there’s two really important things I don’t want to talk about. I should write about THAT.
So I raise my glass to Cafe De La Paz and to cervixes, and toast to them both~

I hate when your favourite restaurant closes. That’s what Cafe Riggio was for me in SF. So many fun and happy memories in that place. Then one day it shut its doors. I was heartbroken.

oooowwwww….I just had to look. I tried to linger, but I only lasted about 3 seconds til it started to hurt down there. OMFG what a website that was….remind me at the next Stitch-n-bitch to tell you a cervix story about my old roommate. And hey, I found a huge typo on my 2009 calendar last month, they had the 24th in there twice, pretty funny.
